The need for a European infrastructure for systems biology has been clearly established for a number of years. A working group was established in April 2009, under the leadership of Professor Richard Kitney, Imperial College, to develop an outline proposal for the ISBE. This was included in the ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) Roadmap 2010.
ISBE is now one of the preparatory phase projects funded by the EC under FP7. The preparatory phase of ISBE is funded by the EC for 3 years from August 2012 to July 2015.
The construction and operational phases will follow the preparatory phase if the EC and the national European governments supply the funding for executing the business plan in a concerted manner. During the construction phase, which is anticipated to last 3 years (2016-2019) a core network of ISBE centres will be put in place, initially, and made operational. This network will then be expanded to provide a fully operational comprehensive infrastructure with ISBE centres located throughout Europe.
Further details about the preparatory phase can be found here.
